A personal diary kept by Edward Mott, a canal laborer, who lived in Sandy Hill (now Hudson Falls), New York, covering the period from 13 June to 8 October 1881. The diary offers a glimpse at the lifestyle of canal workers, that is depicted here as being rough and dangerous. Mott details problems of drunkenness, brawling, pilfering, and other vices of his co-workers.
